Waste Management workers ratify Southern California deal as Teamsters press other haulers
The Local 396 agreement covers 700 workers in Los Angeles and Orange counties, after a separate Republic Services deal covering 1,900.
Seven hundred Waste Management workers in Los Angeles and Orange counties have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement, giving Teamsters Local 396 a second large Southern California waste settlement after a separate deal covering 1,900 Republic Services workers, according to an Oct. 26 statement from the Teamsters.
The local is still bargaining for hundreds of workers at WARE Disposal, Athens Services, CR&R and Park Disposal, and is seeking agreements comparable in strength to the Waste Management settlement. Victor Mineros, Local 396's secretary-treasurer and director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division, said the union is working to secure agreements at other area haulers that are "just as strong as this one."
A separate Orange County labor negotiation was also underway. Teamsters Joint Council 42 was negotiating with the county over a contract for waste and public works employees, City News Service reported. County supervisors reviewed proposals submitted through a mediator at a special closed-door meeting Oct. 23, and union members were expected to vote on the proposal.
The union had paused picketing to allow waste haulers to use county landfills without crossing picket lines, according to City News Service.
