Pearson and Illinois Tech explore AI, healthcare workforce credentials

Pearson and Illinois Institute of Technology announced a partnership to examine workforce credentials and learning programs in artificial intelligence and healthcare, with skills assessment, stackable certificates and micro-credentials among the options, according to their Sept. 8 announcement.

Curriculum development, industry-specific training, executive education and learning experiences aligned with employer needs are among the priorities. The partners said the work is intended to help learners demonstrate and communicate skills employers need.

Healthcare opportunities under evaluation include nursing, medical imaging and allied health professions. The AI work would examine industry-specific applications and ways to expand access to workforce-relevant learning. Pearson brings learning and assessment expertise to the collaboration, while Illinois Tech contributes applied research and technology education.

The potential programs range from dual enrollment and dual credit for high school students to workforce credentialing and lifelong learning. The partners will evaluate opportunities in the United States and selected international markets.

The partnership comes after a summer of cuts at Illinois Tech. The university laid off 160 faculty and staff and had a $47 million budget shortfall at the time of the layoffs, Block Club Chicago reported Aug. 20.
