Hyosung lands $287 million in U.S. transformer orders for AI data centers

Hyosung Heavy Industries has signed approximately $287 million in transformer contracts with two major U.S. technology companies for new AI data centers, according to a Sept. 15 company statement, adding to an order book that had already surpassed last year’s full-year volume by the end of August.

Before the September contracts, new orders through August had reached approximately $6.9 billion, already exceeding the previous year’s full-year volume. Hyosung raised its annual order target from approximately $6.2 billion to $8.9 billion.

The new contracts cover approximately $163 million in 765-kilovolt ultra-high-voltage transformers and $124 million in 345-kilovolt units. The equipment is destined for newly built AI data centers in the northern and southern United States.

In Memphis, Tennessee, Hyosung is expanding the transformer plant it acquired in 2020. The company says the facility will have the largest ultra-high-voltage transformer production capacity in the United States once the expansion is complete. It also established a joint venture with Quanta in July for U.S. production of ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers, adding another category of locally manufactured power equipment.

Hyosung’s organizational changes extend beyond the factory floor. In early September, it formed a Data Center Business Team combining design personnel for transformers and circuit breakers with specialists in energy storage, microgrids and power-stabilization systems. The company said the combined team is intended to serve global data-center operators seeking a single power-infrastructure partner.
